This lady had unfortunately been diagnosed with breast cancer. After an initial consultation, I helped her with a wig styling that would retain her natural look during chemotherapy.

“When the oncologist told me I was probably going to lose my hair with the chemo I thought, no, I will just thin a bit; I will be one of the lucky ones and not lose it. I didn’t want to think about it, but I was very lucky that two very good friends organised a trip to London with me to plan "WHAT IF".

Even on the train, I really didn’t want to do it. I didn’t want to try the wigs on, I didn’t want to go in the shop; I didn’t want anyone to see me. But I had wonderful support and went in the door – what I didn’t think about was that these people do this every day, and they know what they’re doing. They made me feel relaxed – I tried a few on, I cried a little in the shop, but it was all okay. We found a wig that was the right sort of hair for me and near my natural colour, but the shape was wrong and I started to panic a bit. I wanted to look like me, like I always had looked, but my friends had already thought of that and we were booked in the hairdresser’s straight away with said wig. In the hairdresser’s we were shown into a private room, which was an option, and the stylist came in – he showed me how to put the wig on properly and then asked me what sort of style I would like. I just said I wanted to stay looking like me, like I always had, so he started cutting. When he'd finished cutting he then took it off me and coloured it to match my colour. It was perfect – ‘just like me’.

I still believed that I wouldn’t need it, that I wouldn’t lose my hair, but I did. My wig sat there until I was ready to wear it, and that took time. But when I was ready I put it on, at first it gave me a headache, and I felt everybody knew I was walking round with a wig on my head. I thought everyone was looking at me, but I soon got used to it, and it let me get used to things in my head while still looking just the same. Thank god for good friends.”
